Maverick’s Fight: A Tiny Survivor With a Giant Spirit 1081
Maverick has lived up to his name from the very beginning — bold, resilient, and determined to do things his own way. Born at just 24 weeks and two days, he arrived far too soon, weighing little more than a pound. He was a surviving twin who spent his first 164 days in the NICU. Those months were filled with machines, wires, and uncertainty, but Maverick pulled through, proving from his first breath that he was a fighter.
Today, he is a happy, spunky toddler with striking blue eyes and a smile that lights up every room. His favorite things include his daddy, the family dogs, Spiderman, and Blippi. He is endlessly curious, always watching, always learning. Maverick loves people and is deeply social — so much so that he cries when anyone leaves his presence. Despite all the medical experiences he has endured, he doesn’t hold grudges, offering forgiveness and love far beyond his years.

For a while, Maverick’s journey seemed to be smoothing out. After surviving the NICU, his parents believed the worst was behind them. But in 2023, their world shifted once again. Maverick began showing troubling symptoms: a distended stomach and a reduced appetite. At first, his pediatrician thought it might be gastrointestinal issues. But further testing told a very different story.
A CT scan revealed a tumor. Additional tests, including an AFP blood test and a liver biopsy at the ER, confirmed the diagnosis: stage 3 hepatoblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood liver cancer. Classified as intermediate risk, it meant Maverick would need intensive treatment immediately.
Chemotherapy began quickly, but the road was brutal. His first round was so difficult that he ended up in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit twice. His little body struggled to handle the intensity. The second round was milder, but it kept him hospitalized for more than a month. For a toddler who loved people, playing, and socializing, the long hospital stays were particularly hard.

In August 2023, Maverick underwent liver resection surgery. Doctors were able to remove part of his liver, but they were unable to achieve clean margins, meaning cancerous tissue still remained. It was a crushing blow, but Maverick’s fight continued. He endured two more rounds of chemotherapy, and finally, on September 29, 2023, he rang the bell — signaling that he had completed treatment and entered remission.
For his family, that moment was pure joy. They celebrated the resilience of a boy who had already overcome more than most people face in a lifetime. Maverick’s smile was brighter than ever, proof that his spirit remained unbroken.
But remission came with lasting effects. Because of the cisplatin chemotherapy he received, Maverick now lives with high-frequency hearing loss in both ears. It is one more challenge in a life already filled with them, yet his forgiving heart and joyful personality remain unchanged. While he is a little wary of medical staff now, he still offers trust and smiles, teaching everyone around him what it means to persevere.
Soon, Maverick will be celebrating his third birthday — a milestone that seemed impossible when he was born so early, and again when he was diagnosed with cancer. Every candle on his cake will symbolize resilience, strength, and hope.
His parents dream of a future where cancer never returns, where Maverick can grow up healthy and whole, free to chase his passions, make friends, and live life as fully as he deserves. For his mom, Ashley, the experience has reshaped everything. “Watching my son literally struggle for survival his entire life has taught me more about life than my entire thirty-five years of life experience,” she said. “We thought once we made it out of the NICU, we were free and clear. Cancer was never on our radar.”

Ashley compares the cancer journey to a rollercoaster — full of ups and downs, moments of waiting, and moments of urgency. “There is a lot of hurry up and wait,” she explained. Her advice to other families is simple but powerful: “Lean into your medical team. They’ll become like family.”
For Ashley, support from Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) has been an anchor through the storm. “To me, ALSF means hope that one day there will be a cure for all childhood cancers, especially hepatoblastoma,” she said. Programs like Flashes of Hope gave her family professional photographs of Maverick during his hospital stay — cherished memories that capture his joy even in the hardest times.
Maverick’s story is one of resilience, but it is also one of love. From the NICU to cancer remission, he has shown a strength that inspires everyone around him. His laughter, his blue-eyed smile, and his forgiving heart remind us all that even in life’s darkest moments, joy can still shine through.

He is more than a cancer patient. He is a warrior, a survivor, a beloved son, and a light to his family and community. His story is proof that even the tiniest fighters can teach us the greatest lessons about courage, love, and hope.
As Maverick prepares to celebrate his third birthday, his family holds tight to their dreams: a cure, a healthy life, and countless years ahead filled with love, laughter, and strength.
Because Maverick is — and always will be — a true maverick.
